You may not see them at first, but there is a good chance you are going to know they are there. Opossums have a tendency to make their nest in the most convenient places, like beneath your home. Unfortunately, these little critters can cause a lot of trouble while they are there. They often give off a bad smell, will make a lot of racket scratching and hissing, and may even find their way into your house through an opening or pet door. Opossum Removal is usually easy to accomplish with just a few simple steps.

Investigate for the Access Point

Opossums are not very active creatures and they prefer to not have to work in order to make a nest or den. Therefore, it is highly unlikely that they will dig a hole or cause any damage in order to get beneath your home. Check the perimeter to look for an existing opening where the animals could have gained access. This could be pretty small because opossums can squeeze into tight areas.

Wait Until Darkness to Seal Off the Access Point

Opossums are nocturnal and therefore, they will not rouse to go scrounge for food until after darkness falls. It is best to wait an hour or two after dark and then take a flashlight to see if you can spot any critters under the house. If there are no signs of opossums, use something to seal off the entryway. If you are concerned that there may be babies inside, use straw and dirt that would be easy to push away from the inside, but will deter adult opossums from trying to get back inside. Females usually take their babies with them everywhere they go, so in most cases, if you do not see an adult, babies will be gone also.

Precautionary Measures

These animals operate mainly out of convenience. They seek shelter in places that provide cover without having to work for it, and they scavenge for food where it is easy to find. To ward off opossums, simply make sure that you are doing whatever you can to ensure they have no access to food or shelter at your home. Keep animal food in the house, lids on trash barrels, and all openings to the crawlspace covered.

If you would rather not deal with the opossums at your house or you are having a hard time getting them out of your home, pest control can assist you with animal removal. For more information, contact Wildlife Extractors or a similar company.
